Bed Bugs and Mental Health

Bed bugs can be hazardous to your mental health. They remove peace and comfort  from the most intimate places in your home and leave behind anxiety and uncertainty. Where children are involved, it can cause a deep overwhelming sense of helplessness as you can't protect them at night. Getting caught up researching the topic of bed bugs can cause hopelessness as you read about unsuccessful treatments, how you can pick them up from anywhere, and how infestations are on the rise. Studies being conducted are starting to compare the mental health of those that have had bed bugs to symptoms of PTSD.

However, the former mental health of these individuals would need to be documented in order to have a more accurate comparison, according to a study done by Jerome Goddard, PhD, and colleagues at Mississippi State University in an article written by Psychiatry Advisor. The emotional torment you feel after finding out you have bed bugs is normal.

It is stressful to find out you have bed bugs, for some extermination costs alone are too much. For others, the physical demands of meeting the requirements are difficult if not impossible. For families or working individuals, making time to complete the requirements is too great a burden. Rest assured, you are not in a hopeless situation, there is assistance out there for you, if you need it. Below are a few places that have proven to be helpful resources to those suffering from a bed bug infestation.

  • DHS (Department of Human Services)

  • Child protective agencies

  • Adult protective agencies

  • Adoption Agencies

  • Local community centers

  • Churches
